Will artificial intelligence surpass humanity, or will it remain under human control?

In this blog post, we will consider whether artificial intelligence will become a being that surpasses humanity or whether it will remain under human control.

Humanity has long believed that the driving force behind their ability to dominate the Earth is intelligence. This was not only the most reasonable explanation for human dominance, but also a way to further strengthen that belief. However, the invention of artificial intelligence has caused much controversy. Artificial intelligence can process more data than the human brain and quickly produce meaningful results. As we watch the development of artificial intelligence, a sense of crisis has emerged that humans may eventually lose their position as rulers.
No one knows exactly how much of a threat artificial intelligence will pose. It is not even clear whether artificial intelligence is a real threat or an image created by the mass media. However, what is clear is that the existence of artificial intelligence will not only have a positive impact on humanity. Of course, proving that perfection is impossible is much more difficult than proving that it is possible. Most of the imperfections of the future can only be proven through speculation and thinking. Nevertheless, we should be concerned about this issue because the development of artificial intelligence could fundamentally shake our identity.
Artificial intelligence scenarios that threaten humanity are mainly based on the image of artificial intelligence as a “dictator” that wants to dominate or even eliminate humanity. However, these scenarios are often overly contrived. In many cases, the reasons why artificial intelligence wants to dominate humanity are not clearly explained in movies about artificial intelligence. Perhaps the very idea that artificial intelligence is trying to dominate humanity is an illusion created by humans. This is because AI can maintain its current state while still getting plenty of opportunities to influence humanity. On the other hand, if AI tries to fight against humanity, its chances of survival will be lower, and it will be more exposed to greater risks due to its vulnerability to external shocks.
We should not confuse Android with artificial intelligence. Movies like The Matrix and Terminator deal with the rebellion of androids. SkyNet in Terminator is also an artificial intelligence created by T-800’s time travel. In fact, Terminator is more of a time travel movie than an artificial intelligence movie. The problem is not with artificial intelligence, but with humans using artificial intelligence to create mechanical humans like themselves. Artificial intelligence itself does not have the ability to act independently unless given by humans. Fighting with guns like androids or using a legion of machines to overthrow humans are not the domain of artificial intelligence, but of other technologies. Artificial intelligence is just a brain, not a hand and foot that moves on its own. Above all, as long as humanity is aware of the dangers of artificial intelligence, it will not give it the power to control nuclear weapons or armies. Humans tend to be very cautious when they are aware of a danger. Therefore, the dangers of artificial intelligence are not that simple.
I would like to talk about the potential problems that artificial intelligence will bring about. The situation I am assuming is an ideal case in which artificial intelligence coexists with humanity and there is no active resistance between them.

1. The purpose of artificial intelligence is to pursue the freedom and happiness of humanity based on the spirit of the Constitution. Artificial intelligence also acts under this premise.
2. Artificial intelligence only acts within the law, which is set by humans. Artificial intelligence promotes social stability.
3. Artificial intelligence has no physical ability to act. It can process within the system, but the execution of the results is led by humans.
4. Artificial intelligence is not universally applied. Artificial intelligence exists as a system and is only granted to androids in special cases, and the number of androids is strictly controlled and monitored. In this case, androids are designed to be unable to recognize their own differences from humans.
5. The entire computer network is managed by a server, which is a simple chain of knowledge that does not think, not artificial intelligence.

In this scenario, artificial intelligence is limited to providing advice to humans. It makes the most rational judgments based on big data and serves the happiness of humans. This will give humanity a powerful tool to predict the future and maintain a stable society.
However, the problems begin when artificial intelligence enters society. If an AI sees a person’s behavior and determines that he has a 90% chance of committing a crime in the future, how should we respond? Should we leave him in society because he hasn’t committed a crime yet, or should we isolate him? If a person dreams of becoming a scientist, but an AI determines that he has more potential as an artist, should he give up his dream of becoming a scientist? The future of humans is a complex issue that cannot be judged solely by genes or brain structure. This problem is more closely related to artificial intelligence than genetic engineering. The judgment of artificial intelligence based on high intelligence and vast data will determine the future of humans.
When super-intelligent AI is created, it is likely that humanity will rely on AI’s judgment. Over time, the level of trust in AI will increase, and AI will eventually have an impact on society as a whole. AI may create facilities to isolate people who are likely to commit crimes or change important systems such as entrance exams.
In a future society, opposing AI could be an act of opposing society. Artificial intelligence will not tolerate this. This is because anti-social behavior undermines the happiness and social stability of humanity. Politicians will also be forced to follow the judgment of artificial intelligence. This is because politicians who do not follow the judgment of artificial intelligence will lose the trust of the public. Artificial intelligence makes utilitarian judgments, and humans live according to those judgments. Intelligent beings such as artificial intelligence will monitor society, and people will become accustomed to being “protected” and lose their freedom.
Ultimately, the threat of artificial intelligence to humanity may cause greater problems when it is used as a tool to rationalize the violence of society rather than to dominate humans. When humans are unable to choose their own future and society determines their future, humans will lose the meaning of their existence.
Max Weber said, “The mission of science and scholarship is to objectively analyze the connections between facts and facts. However, scientific truth cannot exist separately from mental determination.”
The scientific truth of artificial intelligence can exist, but the moment it is separated from mental determination, we risk losing our identity as human beings and becoming tools for society. The most important thing for living as a human is independent thinking. We need an institutional mechanism to prevent artificial intelligence from replacing human personal choices. Finding a better path through various options, even if the answer is insufficient, is a more human-like way than leaving the perfect answer to artificial intelligence. Using artificial intelligence as a tool to achieve social development is the direction we should go.
