In this blog post, we examine the impact of legalizing egg trading on the dignity of life and women’s right to self-determination amid stem cell research and growing demand for eggs.
With the advancement of science and medicine, we humans have come to expect a future that was unimaginable in the past. It no longer seems impossible to escape the fear of disease and death that we once feared so much. The hope that incurable diseases will be conquered, life expectancy will be extended, and the quality of human life will be improved is becoming a reality. What makes this future possible is the remarkable advancement of life sciences and medicine. Among them, the most notable field of research is human stem cell research. Stem cells are considered an innovative tool with the potential to regenerate damaged body tissues and even replace organ transplants. As a result, stem cell research plays a crucial role in modern medicine and is considered the key to solving numerous medical problems facing humanity.
At the center of stem cell research are human reproductive cells, namely sperm and eggs. These cells not only represent the beginning of new life, but are also used as essential materials in various biotechnological research. Eggs, in particular, are a key element in stem cell culture and play an essential role in the birth of a human being. However, the process of obtaining eggs is not simple. Sperm is relatively easy to obtain and does not involve any particular risks. On the other hand, eggs are ovulated from a woman’s body about once a month, and the process of artificially controlling and collecting them can cause serious side effects to a woman’s body. Women must undergo hormone injections or surgery to collect eggs, which can threaten their health. For this reason, egg trading is prohibited in South Korea and is considered illegal.
However, is outlawing egg sales really the best option? I don’t think so. I believe that legalizing egg sales would solve more problems and contribute to protecting the rights and health of egg donors.
The first reason for legalizing egg sales is very practical. Due to advances in science and medicine, the demand for eggs is increasing. However, due to current legal restrictions, the supply of eggs is very limited, and this shortage is a major obstacle to stem cell research and other biotechnology research. Egg donation should be a voluntary choice, but in reality, many women are unwilling to donate their eggs without financial compensation. Considering the risks to women’s health involved in the egg retrieval process, it is not an easy decision to donate eggs unconditionally. Therefore, I believe that legalizing egg sales and ensuring that donors receive appropriate compensation is a fairer approach. By legalizing egg sales and strictly regulating them, the government will be able to reduce illegal transactions and their adverse effects.
The second reason is the issue of the sanctity of life. One of the main reasons for prohibiting egg sales is the argument that buying and selling eggs is an act that violates the sanctity of life because eggs have the potential to become life. However, I believe that selling eggs is fundamentally different from the commodification of the human body, such as human trafficking and slavery. Eggs are unfertilized and are merely the potential for life, not life itself. There may be various interpretations of the beginning of life from a philosophical and religious perspective, but from a scientific perspective, eggs cannot be considered life in and of themselves. For this reason, I believe that the argument that the sale of eggs violates the sanctity of life is an overly strict interpretation.
Furthermore, legalizing egg sales is also related to respecting women’s autonomy. Women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and if those decisions are made freely, then egg sales should also be recognized as part of that right. This is not simply a financial issue, but also an important issue in terms of protecting women’s right to self-determination. It is important to create an environment in which women can make rational and voluntary choices about their own bodies based on sufficient information.
I have explained two reasons why egg sales should be legalized. These reasons emphasize the practical necessity and understanding of the sanctity of life, as well as legal protection that respects women’s autonomy. Laws need to evolve in line with social demands and changes, and current regulations may not necessarily be the best option. In the future, we will be able to find better ways to resolve controversies such as the legalization of egg sales. Such changes will go beyond the issue of egg sales and serve as an important test of how our society views and protects life and human rights.
