Flexible Display, How Will It Change Our Daily Lives and Industries?

In this blog post, we will look at the changes and possibilities that electronic paper and flexible display technology will bring to our daily lives and various industries.

Introduction

Looking back on human history, we can see that the invention of paper was a turning point that changed the paradigm of the times. What changes will electronic paper, also known as the second paper revolution, bring about? In an era where internet work is becoming commonplace and the paradigm of life is rapidly changing, the limitations of traditional paper are becoming apparent. This is because ordinary paper has difficulty keeping up with the digital and Internet age in terms of improving work efficiency and productivity, innovating work processes, and overcoming constraints on time and space. In addition, with the emergence of environmental issues such as global warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions and the destruction of forest resources, there is a need for a new type of paper that can completely replace the functions of paper while being resource-efficient, environmentally friendly, and capable of meeting the needs of the digital multimedia age. Let’s think about what technologies can improve our lives and environment through the diverse use of flexible displays.
Traditional paper has been an important medium throughout human history. Paper has played a role in storing and transmitting information and has greatly contributed to the preservation of culture and knowledge. However, in today’s information society, the limitations of paper are becoming more apparent. This is because paper has significant physical limitations when it comes to processing rapidly changing information flows and vast amounts of data. Electronic paper, which is attracting attention as a new technology to replace paper, is expected to play an important role in solving these problems.

Flexible Display – Electronic Paper

Electronic paper is also known as E-PAPER. It is an electronic device that can be carried around conveniently like paper books, newspapers, and magazines, and can be easily taken out and read whenever necessary, and notes can also be written on it. Electronic paper, which is portable and thin like paper, can be crumpled and folded at will. It can be carried around in a pocket, and when necessary, it can be taken out and opened to search for the desired information.
Of course, the search method, speed, and amount of information may vary depending on the type and performance of the electronic device. Nevertheless, a single electronic device that can be crumpled and folded like paper and on which characters can be written will replace paper, and when a single sheet of electronic paper can be used to view newspapers, books, and documents at will, the distinction between electronic devices and paper will virtually disappear.
E-books can also be seen as a precursor to electronic paper. Currently, there are two main principles being researched for electronic paper: one uses small balls or capsules less than 0.1 mm in diameter to produce an ink effect, and the other makes existing flat panel displays such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) even thinner to produce a paper effect.
Although various methods are being attempted, the method that uses small balls or capsules with a diameter of less than 0.1 mm to produce the effect of ink by imitating the combination of very small ink droplets in paper printing is attracting attention. In this method, small black and white balls or capsules with electric charges are densely packed between two thin electrode plates, and when the electrode plates are charged with positive or negative electric charges, the balls or capsules move in a certain direction to display black and white images.
In other words, the micro balls, which are divided into black and white, rotate according to the charge and display black and white, and the micro capsules containing countless black or white fine particles with a charge display black and white according to the behavior of the fine particles.
Electronic paper is currently being put to practical use in various fields, and its possibilities are endless. For example, in the field of education, digital textbooks using electronic paper can greatly help improve student learning efficiency. In addition, innovative billboards using flexible displays are appearing in the advertising industry, contributing to maximizing advertising effectiveness. Electronic paper is also attracting attention in the medical field. Flexible display devices that can monitor patient conditions in real time are being developed, playing an important role in improving the quality of medical services.

Flexible Display – Potential Applications

Flexible displays are emerging as a solution to various problems in our digital society. There are many different fields in which flexible displays can be used. Just think about the inconveniences we encounter in our daily lives. Carrying a heavy bag full of textbooks, cell phones, writing instruments, and other items to and from school on a crowded subway makes us feel even more tired. Of course, nowadays, most of these inconveniences can be solved with smartphones and tablet PCs, and these devices are also undergoing continuous technological advances in terms of portability (e.g., iPad 1: 680 g, iPad 2: 600 g, iPad mini ~ …), but basically, there are inevitable limitations on size for readability. However, if foldable tablets and smartphones are developed using flexible displays, they will be thinner and more portable while maintaining the readability of existing tablets. Imagine carrying an all-in-one device in your pocket!
Flexible displays can bring about many changes in our lives. For example, combined with smart home appliances, it will be possible to control all devices in the home with a single display. In addition, the automotive industry can also implement innovative driving environments utilizing flexible displays. All information inside the vehicle will be provided through flexible displays, enabling drivers to drive more conveniently and safely.

Conclusion

The development and popularization of flexible displays are expected to bring tremendous changes to human society.
The flexible display industry is expected to play an important role in raising the value of our society’s cultural industry beyond the simple category of IT. The recent media and cultural industries are suffering from the impact of the public’s increasing use of video and gradual shift away from text media. However, with the advent of flexible displays, the public will have more convenient and affordable access to cultural content, which is expected to revitalize the stagnant media and cultural industries.
However, increasing the operating speed and achieving clear resolution, as well as high costs, are considered to be obstacles to market penetration. In order for flexible displays to become commercially viable, the development of inexpensive models for the IT-disadvantaged must also accompany their introduction.
The development of electronic paper and flexible display technology will make our lives more convenient and prosperous. Looking forward to the future that these technological innovations will bring, we must continue our research and development to create a better world.
