Can the era of personal drones address both convenience and various limitations?

In this blog post, we’ll explore the convenience and diverse use cases of drones, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in everyday life, while also considering the limitations they present—such as privacy invasions, safety incidents, criminal misuse, and security concerns.

 

Imagine an era where you can sit at your computer, do your grocery shopping, and then send your drone to the store—and a few minutes later, your drone safely delivers your order right to your doorstep. Just as computers and cell phones have become essential devices for individuals, what kind of era will follow? Drones are already expanding their scope of use beyond military and industrial settings into various aspects of daily life, and the era of “My Drone”—where individuals use drones tailored to their specific needs—is likely drawing even closer. A drone refers to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that flies without a human pilot, utilizing remote control or autonomous flight technology. Drones can be categorized by various forms and purposes, such as unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, multicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Although interest in drones has surged recently, their history is longer than one might think. The remotely piloted aircraft used during World War I and the unmanned aerial vehicle technology that evolved from them have led to today’s drones. While their use was initially focused primarily on military purposes, it has now expanded into various fields such as filming, logistics, disaster response, facility inspections, agriculture, and traffic monitoring. One of the most common types of personal drones seen today is the quadcopter, a type of multicopter capable of vertical takeoff and landing, similar to a helicopter. As the name suggests, it uses four rotors, and by precisely controlling the rotation speed of each rotor, it can perform a variety of flight maneuvers, including ascending, descending, moving forward, backward, left, and right, as well as rotating.
Drones can be used in various ways in everyday life. First, one of the areas receiving a great deal of attention is delivery services. Since Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos publicly mentioned drone delivery services in 2013, this service has garnered significant interest. At the time, predictions were made that an era would soon arrive in which drones would deliver ordered goods directly to customers. Since then, technological development and regulatory reforms have continued, and Amazon’s Prime Air began actual drone deliveries in select regions of the United States starting in 2022. As of 2026, Amazon is delivering goods within 60 minutes using drones in certain areas of the U.S. and is expanding the regions where drone delivery is available. Furthermore, with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granting permission for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flights, the groundwork is being laid to expand drone delivery to a wider range of areas. A drone delivery service—in which delivery information is transmitted via wireless communication and ordered products are loaded onto drones to fly to their destinations—is becoming a reality. Additionally, drones equipped with cameras are widely used for specialized filming in broadcasting and movies. Because drones hover in the air, they can easily capture footage of areas that are difficult to film from the ground. They also allow for relatively safe filming and inspection of locations that are difficult for humans to access, such as deep caves, high-altitude areas, and disaster sites. Furthermore, drones can be utilized during natural disasters. In fact, during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, an American unmanned aerial vehicle approached the nuclear power plant and used its onboard camera to assess the situation inside the facility. As such, drones can be effectively used to assess conditions in dangerous areas that are difficult for humans to access directly. Aerial platform technologies, such as drones, have also opened up new possibilities in the field of communications. A prime example is Google’s Loon project. The Loon project aimed to provide internet signals to the ground by equipping helium balloons with internet communication equipment, launching them into the stratosphere, and using the balloons as a kind of aerial communication relay. However, despite demonstrating technical feasibility, the Loon project struggled to establish an economically sustainable business model, and it was decided to terminate the project in 2021. Therefore, rather than viewing it as a service currently targeting areas with limited internet access, it is more appropriate to regard it as a representative example of an aerial communication platform that was developed at the time to improve internet accessibility. In addition, drones can be used to monitor traffic conditions in real time and for various public purposes, such as searching for missing persons, tracking criminals, assessing disaster sites, and supporting public safety.
Currently, drones are widely used for public purposes—such as military operations, disaster response, and facility inspections—as well as in industrial settings. In the future, their use for personal purposes is likely to increase, bringing the “My Drone” era ever closer. However, despite their many attractions, drones also have several critical drawbacks that are acting as obstacles to the full-scale arrival of this era. First, a major concern for many people is the invasion of privacy. Most drones used by individuals are equipped with cameras. If such drones fly around homes or buildings and capture videos and photos without proper regulation, people being filmed may feel as though they are being surveilled—even if the drone actually struggles to capture specific objects accurately from the air. In fact, there have been incidents in the United States where drones approaching private property were shot down with firearms—an example demonstrating that conflicts surrounding drone flight and the protection of privacy can occur in reality. Second, there is a risk that the convenience and ease of controlling drones could be exploited. While drones have been utilized in military operations and have contributed to eliminating terrorists or conducting reconnaissance in dangerous areas, concerns have consistently been raised that civilian casualties may occur in the process. Conversely, there have been cases where criminals have used low-cost drones equipped with explosives or hazardous materials to carry out attacks, or to smuggle contraband such as drugs. Furthermore, as personal drone use increases, the likelihood of accidents—such as drones losing control or crashing in unexpected situations—may also rise. In the past, there have been incidents where drones filming from the air crashed and collided with track and field athletes; as the number of drones increases, safety incidents caused by drone crashes or collisions with other objects could also become a significant concern. Finally, drone security issues cannot be overlooked. Spoofing and jamming are prime examples. Spoofing involves sending fake signals to trick a drone into believing they are legitimate location data or signals, thereby disrupting its flight path or location information; jamming uses strong radio waves to interfere with a drone’s communications or location signals. Since these attacks can disrupt normal drone flight or cut off communications, they become a critical issue requiring consideration of both safety and security as the use of personal drones becomes more widespread. In fact, even in the United States, where drone operations are currently widespread, regulations are in place to ensure drone identification and safe operation—such as requiring Remote ID for drones subject to registration—and separate regulations regarding flight procedures and pilot qualifications apply to commercial operations.
As seen above, drones can be applied to various fields, but they also carry significant risks. In South Korea as well, as the drone industry develops, the scope of use by individuals and businesses is expanding; however, since drones are not merely electronic devices but aircraft that utilize airspace, they are subject to various regulations aimed at ensuring safety and protecting privacy. In particular, because drone flights can affect the operation of other aircraft or the safety of people and property, it is difficult to foster industry growth through unconditional deregulation alone. Conversely, overly strict regulations can also hinder the development of drone technology and related industries.
Ultimately, for the drone industry to grow into a next-generation, high-value-added sector, it is necessary to maximize the convenience offered by drones while simultaneously considering the protection of individual privacy, flight safety, security, the prevention of criminal misuse, and national security issues. Establishing appropriate laws and regulations and developing technical safety measures to strike a balance between individual freedom of use and societal safety will be a key challenge moving forward.
