In this blog post, we examine whether the silent operation of electric vehicles is beneficial for the environment or whether it compromises safety and emotional appeal.
Currently, electric vehicles are gaining increasing attention from consumers as they continue to improve in both environmental friendliness and performance. While early electric vehicles faced limitations in driving range and charging time, these shortcomings are gradually being overcome as technology improves. In particular, thanks to government subsidies and support policies, the barrier of high prices is lowering, leading to even greater public interest. Electric vehicles are no longer chosen simply because they are eco-friendly; they are establishing themselves as practical alternatives that combine high performance with convenience.
One of the many advantages of electric vehicles is that they produce almost no noise. This is particularly noticeable in residential areas adjacent to major roads, making them highly appealing to those who wish to be free from noise pollution. Electric vehicles, which allow for quiet travel without the engine noise of gasoline-powered cars, can certainly contribute to reducing noise in urban environments. Consequently, many people expect that once electric vehicles become widely available and replace internal combustion engine vehicles, they will be able to live in a more pleasant environment.
However, the lack of noise needs to be examined from another perspective. This is because the sound of a car plays a role that goes beyond mere noise. For example, the exhaust note of a fast-moving sports car is an element that conveys the car’s powerful engine performance, and for car enthusiasts, it is an attraction in itself. Exhaust sounds symbolize a car’s unique character, and through the sounds of supercars or sports cars, drivers and pedestrians become aware of the car’s presence. These sounds enhance the enjoyment of driving and have become an integral part of automotive culture. Many car enthusiasts cannot help but feel a sense of loss regarding the silent nature of electric vehicles.
The importance of such exhaust sounds is even more evident in auto racing competitions. In Formula 1, a world-renowned racing series, the very sound of racing cars with powerful exhaust notes tearing down the track thrills the audience. This sound conveys the car’s speed and power, igniting the crowd’s enthusiasm. If electric vehicles were used in racing and artificial exhaust sounds were played through speakers, would the audience perceive this as a genuine experience? It is doubtful that an artificial sound, meant to replace the exhaust note from a real engine, could ever match the value of the real thing. This is because the true appeal of a car comes from its natural, unforced sound.
Furthermore, the exhaust note serves a purpose beyond mere enjoyment. The sound of a vehicle alerts pedestrians and other drivers that a car is approaching. One of the main reasons we can recognize a car approaching from behind while walking is the exhaust sound. If electric vehicles were to drive silently, pedestrians would find it difficult to assess their surroundings, potentially increasing the risk of accidents. Not only for pedestrians but also among drivers, the absence of noise makes it difficult to recognize each other’s presence, increasing the risk of collisions at intersections or in alleys. In this regard, exhaust noise serves as an essential element for safety.
Socially speaking, a completely silent environment could actually cause discomfort. We are accustomed to the comfort provided by moderate background noise, such as white noise, in our daily lives. While the sound of car exhaust heard when passing through a major road can sometimes be a nuisance, if it were to disappear entirely, the liveliness of the streets might vanish along with it. An environment that is too quiet can actually evoke a sense of awkwardness and anxiety. As the era of electric vehicles approaches and roads become filled with silence, society will likely need time to adapt to this change.
Electric vehicles are evolving into eco-friendly and efficient modes of transportation and will continue to play an important role in the future. However, we must also consider the possibility that their silent nature could actually diminish the appeal and safety features of these vehicles.
