In this blog post, I will examine the scientific feasibility of the theory of intelligent design—based on William Dembski’s concept of “intelligent design”—and discuss its implications for the theory of evolution and the naturalistic view of science, before summarizing my own perspective on the matter.
In historical times when religion reigned supreme over humanity, the word of God held absolute authority, and no one could easily question it. Amid this historical climate, the development of science was long constrained. Later, through the efforts and sacrifices of countless people, humanity emerged from the long Middle Ages to usher in the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, and science achieved remarkable progress. However, perhaps as a reaction to prolonged religious oppression, Science began to champion naturalism and set out on a path diametrically opposed to that of religion. A prime example is Charles Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species’. Darwin’s theory of evolution has established itself as the core theory of modern biology, explaining the diversity of life, and since then, the scientific community has developed primarily through naturalistic methodologies. Conversely, the scientific community has maintained the position that supernatural explanations, such as creationism, are not within the scope of scientific inquiry. However, philosophical and religious debates continue to this day regarding whether evolutionary theory alone can sufficiently explain the origin of life and all natural phenomena; one of the prominent arguments that has emerged from these discussions is the theory of intelligent design.
The theory of intelligent design cannot be viewed merely as a theory that simply repackages creationism in a more plausible way. William Dembski, a leading figure in intelligent design, emphasizes the importance of science as a tool for uncovering truth in his book ‘Intelligent Design’. He therefore argues that it differs in certain respects from traditional creationism, which is based on theology. However, the claim that intelligent design—which posits that an intelligent being designed the world—is scientific is difficult to grasp at face value. To understand this accurately, we must first examine Dembski’s arguments in detail.
Dembski argues that the theory of intelligent design should be included in the category of scientific theories, just like the theory of evolution. However, he states that since the current scientific framework cannot accept design by an intelligent being, the very concept of science itself must change from what it is today. The scientific worldview that dominates modern society seeks to explain all phenomena through laws and chance, but he believes this approach fails to adequately account for numerous phenomena that are difficult to explain by chance alone. Therefore, he argues that a science incorporating a new category—“design”—is necessary to explain problems, such as the origin of humanity, that cannot be fully accounted for by laws and chance alone.
Demske explains that, within this newly defined framework of science, intelligent design becomes an empirically detectable—that is, testable—theory. He argues that design can be inferred through three conditions: indeterminacy, complexity, and specificity. Indeterminacy refers to situations that do not occur necessarily; complexity means that the situation is not simple but possesses a highly complex structure. Specificity refers to the fact that such indeterminate and complex phenomena exhibit patterns with a specific meaning or purpose. His argument is that if even one of these three conditions is not met, the phenomenon can be explained by existing laws or chance; however, when all three conditions are satisfied, it cannot be explained by laws or chance alone and must be explained by design. Therefore, while existing evolutionary theory has limitations because it explains phenomena that satisfy all three conditions—such as living organisms—solely through evolution driven by laws and chance, the theory of intelligent design argues that it can provide a scientific explanation through the concept of design.
I, too, believe there is a possibility that the theory of intelligent design could be accepted as science. I have long harbored doubts about explanations that rely solely on chance, having failed to find further links in the process of explaining the origin of life. Let’s consider this: Can we really view it as mere chance that the Earth, where we live, maintains an appropriate distance from the Sun, possesses an environment suitable for life, and has developed complex and diverse ecosystems? Given the countless possibilities, it is not easy to simply dismiss the fact that our current environment has formed and diverse life forms have emerged as mere coincidence. In this regard, I believe attempts to introduce the category of “design” into science and to infer design through uncertainty, complexity, and specificity are quite persuasive. This is because it is difficult to view phenomena that satisfy all three of these conditions as mere coincidence.
In fact, there are examples all around us that are difficult to explain solely through chance or necessity. Let’s take the recurring controversies over musical plagiarism as an example. If a song shares very similar characteristics with a previously released song, it is difficult to view this as something that occurred inevitably. This is precisely what uncertainty refers to. Furthermore, a single song possesses a highly complex structure composed of hundreds of notes, beats, harmonies, and rhythms. This corresponds to complexity. If patterns that are substantially identical to those in an existing song are found here, the criterion of specificity is also met. For this reason, rather than viewing the two songs as a mere coincidence, people first consider the possibility that someone intentionally referenced or imitated the existing song. In fact, it would be difficult to accept the claim that all of this is merely a coincidence. From this perspective, I believe we need to reconsider whether it is truly valid to insist on naturalistic explanations exclusively for natural phenomena.
Now, let’s examine the critical essay titled “Is Intelligent Design Valid?” by student Jeon Young-han, who presented opposing views on “intelligent design.” The biggest problem with this essay is that it develops its argument based on the premise that evolutionary theory is correct and intelligent design theory is wrong. One characteristic of those who defend evolutionary theory is that they conduct their discussions based on a naturalistic view of science. They refuse from the outset to acknowledge the possibility that the “new science” proposed by Demski could become a new paradigm capable of replacing existing science. Of course, one can oppose this claim. However, at the very least, sufficient grounds for that opposition must be presented. It is regrettable that Jeon Young-han’s essay does not adequately explain why design cannot fall within the scope of science. Without a thorough discussion on this point, it is difficult to refute Demski’s claim that “within a newly defined framework of science, intelligent design can be a scientific theory,” and the debate will ultimately remain at an impasse, with each side merely repeating its own position.
Even setting aside this lack of discussion, the arguments presented by student Jeon Young-han to refute intelligent design are somewhat lacking. He acknowledges that humans are beings with specified complexity, stating, “Of course, humans satisfy specified complexity. Human beings are highly specific and sufficiently complex.” However, according to Demske’s argument, specified complexity refers to cases that satisfy all three criteria—indeterminacy, complexity, and specificity—and can therefore be explained only by design. Therefore, Jeon Young-han must logically demonstrate that even if all three of these conditions are met, the phenomenon can still be fully explained by natural laws and chance alone.
However, in the very next sentence, he states, “All we can conclude from this is that humans did not suddenly appear one day,” and proceeds to explain the process by which living organisms adapt to their environment. There are two possible rebuttals to this argument. First, this can be viewed as an error stemming from a failure to distinguish between microevolution—changes occurring within an individual—and macroevolution, which involves the diversification of species. Demski himself acknowledges the changes that occur within an individual as it adapts to the environment. His argument is that while it is possible for an individual to change gradually as it adapts to its environment, the process by which a new life form possessing irreducible complexity emerges cannot be explained by simple environmental adaptation alone. This point also serves as a counterargument to the example of the Galápagos finches presented by student Jeon Young-han.
Second, he ultimately explains the process of adaptation to the environment as a repetition and accumulation of chance events. This is not significantly different from the standard evolutionary explanation based on mutation and natural selection. However, in his book, Demske argues that, based on a probabilistic approach, the repetition of such chance events required a time span far longer than the history of the universe for life forms like those we see today to emerge. Of course, this claim is not a widely accepted conclusion within the scientific community either; however, I believe the argument is insufficient because Jeon Young-han’s essay does not present a specific counterargument to it.
Of course, the theory of intelligent design may be invalid. Furthermore, it would be unreasonable to conclude, based on this single book alone, that intelligent design is correct and evolutionary theory is wrong. In particular, within today’s scientific community, evolutionary theory is widely accepted as the core theory of modern biology, and the prevailing view is that intelligent design is a philosophical and religious claim rather than a scientific theory. Furthermore, even in this book, it is difficult to argue that the theory of intelligent design presents sufficient empirical evidence to garner consensus within the scientific community. I believe these limitations clearly exist.
However, the significance of this book lies in the fact that it raises new questions about the existing view of science. The very act of critiquing existing perspectives and proposing new possibilities is highly meaningful in the process of academic development. Science has advanced continuously by proposing various hypotheses and subjecting them to verification and falsification. Therefore, rather than unconditionally rejecting differing viewpoints, it is important to adopt an attitude of fair evaluation based on clear reasoning, logic, and verifiable evidence. Any claim must be open to criticism and verification; conversely, it should not be accepted as fact without sufficient evidence.
Intelligent design is one of the theories that remains the subject of much ongoing debate. No one can definitively predict the direction in which it will develop or how it will be evaluated in light of new evidence or research. Research on the origin of life is still ongoing and is likely to continue for a long time to come. Ultimately, which explanation proves most persuasive will be determined through ongoing research and verification.
